Hello 6th and 8th graders! This week we will begin a unit on the artist Roy Lichtenstein! Roy Lichtenstein was an American Pop artist from the 1960’s. He worked with a number of other Pop artists of that time including Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. Many thought Lichtenstein was a horrible artist when he began sharing with the public. Take a look at his life and work below to discover how he transformed the public view of his art from “horrible” and “cheapening the comic book genre” to one of the most iconic artists of his century. 1. Let’s review the Pop art movement by watching the Brain Pop video here. 2. Next, take a look at these videos about Roy Lichtenstein below. Video: Whaam! Roy Lichtenstein at the Tate Modern Video: Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein 3. Lichtenstein used Onomatopoeia’s in many of his works. An Onomatopoeia is a word that looks like the sound it makes, such as “Whaam” or “Boom”. Step 1: Using the lettering technique you have learned in class (draw stick letters for your onomatopoeia, trace around them, and erase the inside lines when you are done), create your own onomatopoeia on a piece of drawing or printer paper using a pencil. FILL THE PAGE WITH ONE ONOMATOPOEIA, but leave room for your surrounding lines/shapes! Step 2: Draw lines and shapes around your onomatopoeia that help visualize the sound you are creating. Step 3: Add color using markers. If you have tempera paint or acrylic paint at home, you may use that too! Think about using opposite colors and/or replicate some of the colors used in Lichtenstein’s paintings (yellow, blue, red, white, black). Step 4: Take a pic and upload it to Google Classroom or save it in a folder to share later. But if you are able to, please upload. Tip and tricks: Take a look at this youtube video to get ideas on how to add color. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck and have fun! TR Comments are closed.
